¡Hola! My name is Maria
[hidden text]; I am one of nine lucky young Americans in Rotary District 6690 about to embark on the greatest journeys of our lives. I am so excited to be spending 10 months in Merida, Mexico! Due to my approaching 18th birthday, I pushed myself to graduate high school a year early. I graduated in only 3 years because I wanted to have a “Gap Year” between high school and university, like my older sister who spent her gap year in Pune, India. I completed my final year by taking extra classes, without study hall sometimes, and with additional correspondence classes.
I live in a suburban home in
[hidden text] with my Mom, Dad and older sister, Janine. My favorite things include spending time outdoors, hanging out with my family and just being creative (drawing, painting, photography).
Living abroad in Mexico isn’t my first experience overseas. As a young child, my family lived in Cambridge, England for six months. Later, during my 5th grade year, my family and I moved to Brussels, Belgium for six months. I went to a British school (BEPS) where I made lifelong friends from all around the world, including Wales, Morocco, and Sweden.
I am looking forward to this opportunity because I want to expand my knowledge of other countries outside of the United States and immerse myself in Spanish. The thought of meeting new people, seeing new things, trying new foods, everything new, is so exciting to me! I cannot begin to thank Rotary enough for this amazing opportunity, and am looking forward to what Mexico has in store for me!
